Ivan Messmer, former B.C. mayor and cabinet minister, dies at age 83

PENTICTON, B.C. – A former mayor of Penticton, B.C., member of the province’s legislature and cabinet minister has died at the age of 83.

Ivan Messmer was born in Barrhead, Alta., moved to Penticton in 1967 and built houses and the Peacock’s Perch Pub in Summerland.

He served as mayor of Penticton from 1980 to 1986 and represented Boundary-Similkameen as a member of the Social Credit party from 1986 to 1991.

Messmer was promoted to cabinet and served as solicitor general and minister of parks.

Penticton MLA Dan Ashton says Messmer was a straight shooter who was fiercely loyal and cared deeply about the city and province.

He died at his home in Penticton on Sunday. (Penticton Herald)
