Oft-delayed hearing in drug, rape case of former NFL star Darren Sharper set for next week

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Lawyers say they are ready for a preliminary hearing next week for former NFL All-Pro safety Darren Sharper on charges that he drugged and raped two women in Los Angeles County.

Judge Michael Pastor on Wednesday scheduled the hearing next Tuesday to see if prosecutors have enough evidence to try Sharper.

Frequent delays in Los Angeles Superior Court have led federal prosecutors in New Orleans to postpone transferring Sharper to face similar allegations there.

Sharper has pleaded not guilty to drugging women he met at a West Hollywood nightclub and raping them while they were unconscious.

He faces similar charges in Arizona and Louisiana, and federal authorities have ordered the Los Angeles sheriff to turn him over to U.S. marshals in New Orleans on April 6.
