David Chipperfield Architects chosen for NY Met Museum renovations for modern/contemporary art
NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Metropolitan Museum of Art has announced it has chosen an architect to develop a new design for its wing housing modern and contemporary art.
The museum said Wednesday that a year-long search resulted in the selection of David Chipperfield Architects. Museum Director Thomas P. Campbell says renovations are the first phase of a long-term plan to make improvements at the museum founded in 1879.
In a release, Campbell noted that David Chipperfield had global architectural experience and sensibility. He says his museum projects have included work at the Neues Museum in Berlin, the Museo Jumex in Mexico City, the Saint Louis Art Museum and The Hepworth in Wakefield, England.
Results of the project are likely to be seen by spring 2016.
The museum has 6 million visitors annually.
