German Shepherd puppy loses a leg after falling from truck in Williams Lake

A German Shepherd puppy named Chilli was severely injured when it fell from the back of a pickup truck in Williams Lake and is now in need of a little extra help on its road to recovery.

“Chilli had such deep wounds all along her leg that the limb was beyond repair and she required an emergency amputation to save her life,” B.C. SPCA Williams Lake and District Branch manager Liz Dighton said, in a press release.

Chilli’s front leg was torn at the shoulder under her chest and down into the inside of her front leg, severing the muscles from her shoulder to her chest. Her skin was torn off from her forearm to armpit and she had numerous severed arteries.

The B.C. SPCA is asking for donations to aid in the cost of care for Chilli. With the amputation, surgery, follow up examinations, physiotherapy and daily care they expect her vet bills to total $4,230.

Chilli will be available for adoption in about three weeks.

“This young lady is super-friendly and sweet,” Dighton. “She enjoys cuddles and is so careful to be gentle when around people. We really hope that people can donate towards her emergency surgery.”

The B.C. SPCA reminds people that it is illegal to transport an unsecured pet in the back of a pickup truck under Section 72 of the B.C. Motor Vehicle Act and Section 9.3 of the B.C. Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. Animals should ride in the cab of the car, and if they must be in the box of a pickup truck, they should be secured in a crate in the middle of the truck bed.
