Highway 1 closed near Revelstoke after two semis collide head-on

Highway 1 near Revelstoke will be closed for some time this morning after a serious collision involving two commercial tractor trailers.

The two rigs collided head-on around 4:30 this morning, Dec. 6., according to Revelstoke RCMP Staff Sgt. Kurt Grabinsky. Both drivers were pinned in their vehicles and had to be extracted by Revelstoke Fire Rescue Services and taken to Queen Victoria Hospital in Revelstoke. Both drivers have potentially life-threatening injuries.

The highway will be closed while RCMP collision analysts can complete their investigation and remove the trucks from the road. Grabinsky also said the road must be cleared and deemed safe by local highways maintenance crews. Keep an eye on Drivebc.ca for travel information.

Grabinsky said there was heavy snow in the area at the time and -5 C.

"The police would like to remind all drivers that roadways are constructed for safe driving at or below the posted speed limit," Grabinsky said. "Driving to road conditions means travelling at a rate which ensures the ability to safely maintain your lane and stay on the road. All drivers are encouraged to slow down: drive the speed limit, (or the recommended or variable speed limits), and do their part to ensure that everyone gets to their destination safely."
