Kamloops ceremony today to honour women killed in Montreal Massacre

Today is the 30th anniversary of the Montreal Massacre and events are planned across the country including a ceremony at Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops.

On the evening of Dec. 6, 1989, a gunman entered Montreal's Ecole Polytechnique, killing 14 women in an anti-feminist mass slaying before taking his own life.

In Kamloops, a candle ceremony and moment of silence will be held today, Dec. 6, at 3 p.m. in front of the Old Main Building at the TRU campus.

The TRU Faculty Association status of women committee event hopes to highlight the many ways in which women fall victim to violence, such as the missing and murdered indigenous women, injustices against transgender women, and other female-focused issues, according to a media release. The flags at the campus will be lowered to half-mast to recognize women who have lost their lives to violence.

Following the ceremony, light refreshments will be offered at House 1, next to the campus daycare.
