Geminid meteor shower peaks with a full moon this week

The night sky this week offers a couple of events worth looking up for if the skies are clear in Kamloops and the Okanagan.

The full moon officially arrives at 9:12 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 11.

If the clouds make way, the moon’s illumination should be visible all night, rising in the east around sunset and peaking high in the sky around midnight.

On Saturday, this year’s Geminid meteor shower reaches its peak, but the time coincides with this week’s full moon, making for some extra light in the sky that could diminish some of the lesser meteors.

The Geminid meteor shower is a highlight of the meteor year, according to earth sky.org.

The meteors tend to be distinct, white and quick. The shower is expected to be best seen around 2 a.m. on Dec. 13 and 14.

The meteors appear in all parts of the sky. Observers should allow at least an hour to watch the sky, as it takes about 20 minutes for eyes to adapt to the dark.

Under optimum conditions, the meteor shower should present 10 to 15 meteors per hour, but finding an ideal viewing location in Kamloops and the Okanagan might be difficult this year, as the forecast for Saturday night calls for cloudy skies.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
