Changes could be coming at Vernon parking meters

VERNON – Vernon currently has the shortest grace period among nearby communities when it comes to expired parking meters, but that could be about to change.

City council will vote on changing the grace period to five minutes from the current two next Monday to make downtown Vernon more customer friendly. City staff reviewed other cities in the region to see what kind of grace periods they offer, and learned Vernon is on the low end.

Penticton offers three minutes for metered parking and ten minutes for parking lots that have permit dispensers. Kelowna provides three minutes and Kamloops five minutes. Staff also looked at grace periods in North Vancouver, where 10 minutes are given, Richmond, five minutes, and Whiterock, 10 minutes.

Bylaw estimates reprogramming the meters would cost around $3,200.

Revenue from parking violations brings in over $225,000 a year.

In Victoria you can buy a prepaid card. The card will deduct your cash and when you’re done shopping you reinsert the card and it credits back what you haven’t used.I think this is the best when it comes to meter parking!

Grace periods! Are you kidding us? Why do you need to have a vote on this? Should just be! I work down town and have watched bylaw over the last few days booking people who cant even get to the meters, little old lady’s trying to climb over snow banks to try and plug there meters, The city hasn’t even cleared any of the side streets or removed snow from around the meters in the down town core yet! This is stopping many people from coming down town.Business is tough enough for a lot of retailers down here. Come on city of Vernon you need to have a vote on this, but you cant even get our streets cleaned up!
