Penticton Indian Band members vote to hold new byelection
Members of the Penticton Indian Band have voted in favour of holding a new byelection.
Band communications coordinator Dawn Russell said in a press release an appeal for a new byelection was recently supported by the Federal Court ruling in the case of McPherson vs. Buck.
The appeal followed the resignation of five band councillors in 2016 and a subsequent byelection held in November 2017
Yesterday’s, Dec. 12, band vote saw 167 members cast ballots with 95 in favour of a new byelection to elect five council members for the remaining year of this council term.
Ninety-five band members voted in favour of a byelection with 72 opposed to the vote, which would effectively replace those elected in 2017.
A nomination meeting is scheduled for Dec. 19.
