Construction begins on bridge to economic development in Penticton

PENTICTON – Preliminary construction on the new bridge across the Channel Parkway at Green Avenue began this week.

Flaggers and traffic cones lined the road north and south of the Green Avenue intersection on Friday as workers removed traffic islands, causing some confusion to motorists as well as some minor slowdowns.

Penticton Indian Band Chief Jonathan Kruger said the bridge project was just getting underway.

“We have a tender out and the bridge is going to be built this year,” he said. “This will be the start of a huge economic development. We are working with the owners of the locatee lands across the channel to develop that property. It’s accessible and easy to work, and the development will enhance the look of the river channel. There’s going to be some good things happening with the Penticton Indian Band and the band locatees as we develop new facilities for everyone.”

Kruger said traffic lights will also be installed at the Green Avenue intersection.

Penticton is a stagnant city. It has to grow or it will wither. There are a lot of wasted opportunities that could make Penticton more of a destination city for the South Okanagan and this development is one of them. Hopefully it will lead to more development with the PIB.

if I understand this article correctly, the City has started reconfiguring the bypass to,prepare for a bridge which has not had contractors hired, for a development that has not yet received committment from the locatee owners of the land. Why would the city not wait until everything else is firmed up before spending money? I am not being negative about development. We need new jobs in this town. But isn’t this a bit like buying tires for a car before I know what kind of car I am going to buy or how I am going to pay for it?

  3. Right on, I think it’s great, Penticton needs enhancement and more development other than another Tim Hortons or Dollar Store!

I think it’s awesome, growth and change is never a bad thing. I live right off of Green and look forward to the new changes and potential opportunities this will bring.

I agree a waste of tax money, a way to ruin good farm land & we don’t need another bloody light and intersection to slow traffic down and cause more headaches! We don’t need more development that will bring more big box stores to Penticton and drive more small business to close!Big box store money doesn’t stay in the community!

Do we know what is going to happen to the ranch and all the cattle that this intersection will cross through?

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
