Police shoot dog in overnight incident

KAMLOOPS – Police are investigating one of their own after a dog was shot by an RCMP officer while making an arrest.

The pit bull-labrador cross is expected to survive but Sgt. Edward Preto says the serious crime unit was called in to investigate the incident. Police were initially called to a home on the North Shore about a distraught 27-year-old woman wielding an axe. Two officers on scene made contact with the woman while someone else in the home was holding the dog before it escaped.

"The dog cornered one RCMP officer in the hallway and the officer, fearing that he was about to be bitten, discharged his service pistol," Preto said in a release. "One round was fired, striking the dog, which halted the attack."

The woman was taken into custody without further incident. The dog was taken to a local veterinarian for treatment and is expected to make a full recovery.

No one was injured as a result of the dog being shot.
