Heavy snowfall boon for ski resorts in Kamloops and Okanagan regions

Mother nature is making up for a late start to the alpine snow season in the Thompson-Okanagan.

Snow was light and late in coming to the region’s ski areas in December but a couple of low pressure systems that brought snow to the higher elevations have helped make up for the slow start.

The last 24 hours’ snowfall has bumped up local ski resort bases considerably, with the forecast calling for more later in the week.

Apex Mountain Ski Resort, 45 minutes west of Penticton, is reporting 29 centimetres of new snow in the last 24 hours with a base of 139 cm.

Baldy Mountain Ski Resort, 35 minutes east of Oliver, is reporting 11 cm new snow in the past 24 hours. The mountain opens on Thursday at 8:30 a.m. for the weekend.

Big White Ski Resort, an hour southeast of Kelowna, is reporting 27 cm of new snow in the past 24 hours with a 217 cm base.

Silver Star Resort, a half hour northeast of Vernon, is reporting 15 cm of new snow in the last 24 hours with a 154 cm base.

Sun Peaks Ski Resort, 45 minutes north of Kamloops, is reporting seven cm of new snow in the past 24 hours with a base of 145 cm.

Harper Mountain, about 20 minutes from Kamloops, is reporting a 124 cm base for skiing and snowboarding, along with tubing and snowshoeing. The ski hill is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
