Kamloops RCMP arrest woman found with multiple stolen garage door openers

Police in Kamloops are asking the public to not leave overhead garage door openers in their vehicles after a suspect was found in possession of three door openers.

Early this morning, Jan. 8, a homeowner in Juniper Heights awoke to his residential alarm going off. The homeowner heard the garage door open and saw a female suspect leaving the area, according to a RCMP press release.

When officers attended the area, they found a suspect matching the description and a 41-year-old woman was arrested without incident.

A search by officers revealed the female suspect had two garage door openers and household items in her possession. The garage door openers were determined to be from nearby homes and the household items were from inside their residences.

According to police, the woman allegedly took the garage door openers from vehicles parked outside of the residences, opened the garages, entered the houses while the residents slept and stole items.

Online court records show Jennifer Llewellyn Owen, born 1978, was charged with two counts of break and enter of a dwelling with intent, two counts of theft under $5,000 and one count of breaching a release order. Owen was scheduled to make a court appearance today for a bail hearing.

“It is a frightening experience to know a thief has been in your home let alone one being in your home while you and your family are inside asleep,” Kamloops RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Jodi Shelkie says in the release. “Always remove all valuables including the overhead garage door opener from our vehicle.”
