Snow-filled weekend for Kamloops with a deep freeze to follow

Kamloops residents can look forward to a wintery weekend with a forecast calling for snow, snow and more snow along with plummeting temperatures by Sunday night.

Environment Canada meteorologist Doug Lundquist says a couple of centimetres of snow has fallen in Kamloops so far today, Jan. 20, with another two cm expected before the day is done.

The snow is expected to continue through the weekend with the next significant accumulation coming Sunday.

A snowfall warning has been issued for the North Thompson, Shuswap and North Okanagan.

Lundquist says Kamloops could see another five to 10 cm in periods of snow on Sunday before an Arctic front moves through. Temperatures could dip to the around -20 C in what he describes as a “cold event.” At this point, he says it doesn’t appear low temperature records will be broken.

The forecast calls for up to five cm of snow today along with east winds at 30 km/h gusting to 50. Those winds could create a windchill in the -10 Celsius range with a high today of -1 C and an overnight low of -7 C. A 60 per cent chance of flurries continues overnight with winds becoming light by this evening.

Periods of snow are in the forecast for Saturday with between two to four cm expected with the wind becoming east at 20 km/h gusting to 40 by the afternoon. Saturday’s high should reach 0 C. More snow is in the forecast for Saturday night with a low of -5 C expected.

The mercury starts dropping with a vengeance on Sunday, with more snow forecast along with a high of -5 C. Periods of snow will accompany a cold night as the low drops to -21 C.

The skies are expected to clear by Monday, but at a cost, with the mercury only rising to -19 C.

Monday’s low could dip to -26 C.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
