City finalizes 2015 budget

PENTICTON – Penticton city council has finalized their budget after just six days of deliberations.

On Jan. 12, 2015 council approved a 1.3 per cent increase to cover a $326,230 deficit.

Mayor Andrew Jakubeit said the 2015 budget factors in cost control and fiscal responsibility, in addition to several strategic investments asked for by residents and businesses last fall.

“Our citizens have told us they want to see our community grow, and this budget delivers on that promise,” he said.

Budget increases were kept in check in spite of increased RCMP costs of $188,000 and an increase in fire department investments of $309,000. At the same time, the city has also been able to allocate $443,000 to economic development priorities and an additional $125,000 to host a media conference in 2015.

Changes were also made to the city’s business tax multiplier which is intended to make the City of Penticton more competitive and cost effective to business. An incremental change that will see the business multiplier drop from 1.667 to 1.5  will make the city the most competitive in the Okanagan Valley and among the top five in the province.

The tax rate change in 2015 will increase taxes on an average assessed home of $350,000 by $30.92 annually.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
