iN VIDEO: Cat that survived sea journey from China soon ready for B.C. adoption

Journey is an apt name for this travel-weary cat currently recovering at the Maple Ridge SPCA.

Journey’s story first came to light in April, 2019, following the three-week voyage out of Shenzhen, China to Vancouver, according to a BC SPCA media release. The feral cat was then trucked to Prince George where she was found, emaciated and terrified, hiding in a crate bound for an auto glass distribution company in that city.

The BC SPCA, which has been updating Journey's progress since she was discovered, said Journey faced life-threatening medical issues and was quarantined in a Prince George veterinary hospital where she was given fluids and gradually re-introduced to solid food.

As her strength returned, she was transferred to the Maple Ridge branch of the SPCA. She continued to be terrified of human contact, however and would hiss and growl at staff.

The six-year-old cat is becoming less fearful of human contact while continuing to recover under SPCA care. She now sits calmly instead of jumping into the rafters or hiding in a corner at the approach of people.

The SPCA says Journey is currently being fostered by board certified veterinary behaviourist Dr. Karen van Haaften, who says the cat will need more time in her foster home before she will be ready for adoption. An update will be provided when applications for adoption of Journey are open to the public.
