Knife-wielding man arrested after making threats at Vernon rec centre

A man was arrested after making threats at the Vernon rec centre yesterday.

Officers were called to Vernon Recreation Centre at around 8:20 p.m. March 6 where a man with a knife was allegedly threatening staff and other people in the facility, according to a press release from police.

RCMP didn’t name the Greater Vernon Recreation in its release, it just referred to a “public facility” in 3300-block of 37 Avenue.

“Unless there’s an investigational need, we don’t really name businesses or name locations,” Vernon RCMP media liaison officer Const. Chris Terleski told iNFOnews.ca.

Officers went to the rec centre and safely arrested the suspect without any incident.

No injuries were reported and police are still investigating.

Andrew Turchin, 27, has been charged with assault with a weapon, two counts of uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm, possessing a weapon for dangerous purpose and causing disturbance.

Turchin remains in custody and will be back in court on Monday, March 10.
