Penticton firefighter commended for bravery

PENTICTON – A Penticton firefighter was commended for bravery during a presentation at the Jan. 14, 2015 meeting of Penticton city council.

Penticton Mayor Andrew Jakubeit presented firefighter Curtis Gibbons with a Certificate of Commendation from the office of the Governor General of Canada in recognition of his assistance in helping a drowning swimmer in 2012.

Gibbons was walking with his wife near the last set of stairs on the river channel before it enters Skaha Lake on June 10, 2012. Hearing people yelling for help, Gibbons and his wife ran under the bridge and saw someone struggling to keep their head above water. People nearby were calling for help, but could not themselves reach the swimmer.

The water is shallow for quite a distance in that area, so Gibbons ended up running a long ways into the lake to reach the swimmer, who was being carried out by the channel current and couldn’t overcome it to swim back to shore. Gibbons reached the swimmer, instructed him to roll onto his back and dragged him approximately 100 feet to a boater who noticed the incident unfolding. They made it to shore just as emergency responders were arriving on scene.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
