Penticton city council approves outdoor patio for Cannery Brewing

A staff recommendation to support Cannery Brewing Company’s bid for an application for a facility structural change for an outdoor patio was passed by Penticton City Council yesterday.

The brewery wants to add an exterior patio directly adjacent the existing building on the north side of 172 Ellis St.

The patio would come with a proposed occupant load of 199 persons, with service hours from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday to Sunday, a staff report prepared by building and permitting manager Ken Kunka said.

The brewery has been located at the Ellis Street location since 2015 and consists of a brewery, retail area and a brewery lounge.

The business currently has a total occupant load of 146 persons, allowing 110 interior patrons and 36 in an existing exterior patio located along the south side of the building.

The majority of the proposed patio area will be table seating with a small entertainment area for games like bocce, or live music for special events, with a covered seating area of 30 x 30 feet.

The remainder of the space will be uncovered to create an outdoor, park-like setting.

There are no proposed changes to the business’s existing hours of service or occupant loads.

Council spoke highly of Cannery Brewing's business practices at its meeting yesterday, Jan. 21, eventually agreeing to allow the patio's operating hours to match those of the rest of the business. Council did, however restrict amplified music to no later than 9 p.m.

The Liquor Control and Licensing Branch requires local governments consideration on applications coming before it. A notice of application and request for comment was mailed to businesses and residences within 100 metres of the brewery.
