
Dicey driving: One section of Highway 97 has always been challenging
It’s a section of highway that has been the bane of motorists and highways engineers since the horse and buggy days.
These early photos of a stretch of Highway 97 at the rock bluff along the east shoreline of Vaseux Lake show the difficulties of travel along that portion of the highway goes back to pioneer times.
The highway winds between the lake and the rock bluff and has a sharp corner that has been the scene of many collisions, several of which have been fatal.
These days a large electronic sign monitors motorist’s speed and provides a cautionary notice is the latest in attempts at improving safety on this infamous stretch of highway.
