B.C. hockey mom remains on life support following vicious attack outside rink

SURREY – Investigators say a British Columbia hockey mom remains on life support two days after she was attacked outside a community rink in Surrey.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team is reviewing surveillance tape and appealing for public assistance after the 53-year-old woman was beaten outside the arena on Sunday night.

Police have said the victim, who was waiting for her referee son to finish officiating a minor hockey game, is not expected to survive.

Investigators believe the attack was random and possibly linked to robbery, similar to another attack in the same Metro Vancouver area on Dec. 16.

The woman was a volunteer for the Surrey Minor Hockey Association, and her son plays on a team in the same league.

There have been two dozen homicides in Surrey in 2013, a record high that prompted the mayor to launch a task force last month.

SURREY – Police say a woman who was viciously attacked outside a hockey arena in Surrey, B.C., isn't expected to survive her injuries.

Officers and an ambulance were called to the Newton Arena on Sunday night for a report of an unconscious woman in the parking lot.

Police say they found the 53-year-old Surrey woman with injuries so serious she isn't expected to recover.

Homicide investigators have taken over the case and say it appears the attack was random and motivated by robbery.

There was another attack in the same area on Dec. 16, and police say there are similarities in both investigations.

There have been two dozen homicides in Surrey so far this year, a toll that prompted the mayor to launch a police task force.
