Oliver mountain resort cancels ski race and involves RCMP

A popular Baldy Mountain Resort race was cancelled and chairlift was closed this weekend after an incident allegedly involving a former employee.

According to a statement on the resort’s Facebook page, it closed the Sugarlump chair and cancelled the Nancy Greene Zone Race which was going to be held Sunday, Jan. 26. The race was expected to have 126 participants, according to the Mt. Baldy Alpine Club’s website.

In a statement made online, resort staff said it reported a former employee to the RCMP for alleged actions they couldn't expand on. They did, however, stress the safety of the resort was being made a priority.

“We are working with Technical Safety BC to ensure that we are continuously providing a safe and enjoyable environment for our guests and families. Our team has taken all necessary (and extra) precautionary steps to ensure that our equipment and lifts are operating safely and efficiently."

In addition to working with Technical Safety BC, they have also been in contact and are working with their lift company partners and experts in chair lift mechanics to ensure all lifts are safe and operational.

"Guest and staff safety (is), and always has been, of paramount concern and our top priority,” the statement reads.

The equipment and lifts have been inspected and are safely operating, the statement read.

The Mt. Baldy Alpine Club has invited anyone who is staying on the mountain to have fun on the Eagle Chair today starting at 9:30 a.m. Cupcakes and prizes will be given out at the end of the day.

Christine Cuttle with guest services, said no new information is available outside of the resort's statement at this time.
