Accused cop shooter hires lawyer, still awaits bail hearing

KAMLOOPS – The man accused of shooting a Kamloops RCMP officer has hired a lawyer for his bail hearing on Jan. 29.

Kenneth Michael Knutson, 36, was supposed to have his bail hearing today, Jan. 15, but the matter was remanded to later this month. Since his last court date, Knutson hired Victoria-based lawyer Jordan Watt to represent him. Knutson made a brief video appearance in provincial court from Kamloops Regional Correctional Centre today.

The officer who Knutson is accused of shooting, Cpl. Jean-René Michaud, remains in a Vancouver Hospital where he continues his recovery.

"We're certainly optimistic for his return to Kamloops," Mueller said. There's no date yet for his return, but Mueller said the officer has made "favourable progress" in his recovery.

Knutson is charged with attempted murder in the commission of a criminal organization, aggravated assault of a peace officer, possession of a firearm while prohibited and discharging a firearm with intent to wound, maim, disfigure or endanger life.

Those of you that are of the opinion that Kenneth Knutson should “rot in hell, be locked up for life, and die” you all do realize that he is a suspect. He has not been found guilty of this and it is very early in the investigation…..You all seem to feel you are superior members of society, better people……. Good people and constructive members of society would not speak like this or say these horrid things about a man, causing further irrevocable damage to name and incidentally his family, until the findings after trial.Speak what you will and feel anyway you choose about the person responsible for this but to speak this mans name……that shows more about your character then you are about his.
