Busted fire hydrant creates road closure

VERNON – Slippery roads caused a driver to swerve into a fire hydrant outside Okanagan Spring Brewery this morning.

RCMP spokesperson Gord Molendyk says the driver lost control coming down the hill at 28th Avenue around 6:30 a.m. and struck a hydrant outside the brewery, causing it to spew water along the road. The driver was uninjured.

The gushing water quickly turned to ice and the city has barricaded the area off to conduct repairs. The road is closed to traffic on 28th Avenue from 29th Street to 28th Street, and is expected to reopen around 11 a.m.

An undetermined amount of water damage was done to the brewery.

The breakage follows two recent incidents involving broken water lines, one of which caused the art gallery to shut down.
