Vernon tax hike lower than expected

VERNON – This year’s taxes will go up, but not as much as first expected.

After three days of budget deliberations for the 2015 financial plan, council wrapped up with a hike of 3.43 per cent, down slightly from the original 3.7 per cent.

“That just shows the amount of work the management and their staff have done to look at the numbers and fine tune as much as they can,” Mayor Akbal Mund says.

The increase breaks down to 1.9 per cent strictly for infrastructure upgrades—including roads, sewers and sidewalks—and 1.5 per cent for city operations. Council was originally looking at 1.8 per cent for operations.

The budget bylaw still requires final approval from council, which is set to happen Feb. 10.
