Crime reduction strategies paid off in 2013, police say
VERNON – Crime reduction initiatives have started to pay off in the North Okanagan, say police.
Spokesperson Gord Molendyk says the RCMP shaved its calls for service to 27,655 in 2013, down from 28,100 in 2012. While only a slight decrease (about one less call per day) Molendyk says they’re moving in the right direction.
“It’s going the way that we are hoping through our initiatives in relation to crime reduction,” Molendyk says.
Last year, police began cracking down on prolific offenders, something that has led to reductions in thefts, break-and-enters, and other crimes perpetrated to “support their habit”, Molendyk says.
Police also stepped up efforts against impaired driving.
The 27,655 calls for service in 2013 include everything from lost wallets and stolen bikes to more serious crimes like assaults and robberies.
