Gusty winds expected in Okanagan today

You might want to consider tying down movable objects this afternoon as the Okanagan could experience some strong winds.

There are no wind warnings out, but Environment Canada says Penticton could see south winds at 30 km/h gusting as high as 70 km/h today, March 5.

Winds in Kelowna and Vernon won’t be as strong but are expected to become south at 20 km/h, increasing to 40 and gusting to 60 near noon.

The wind should die down this evening, with a low of -2 C expected in Vernon and Kelowna, and -1 C in Penticton.

With typical normal high and low temperatures of 7 C and -3 C for Vernon, Kelowna and Penticton, the next few days should see temperatures at or slightly above seasonal norms over the weekend, with daily highs in the upper single digits.

The weekend should be great for getting a start on outdoor spring chores with mostly sunny skies predicted for Friday and Sunday.

The only exception is Friday night and Saturday, when some parts of the Okanagan may see a 70 per cent chance of flurries or rain showers in between a sun and cloud mix.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
