More winter than spring in this week’s Okanagan forecast

Spring is taking the week off in the Okanagan as temperatures fall short of seasonal normals along with snow flurries in the forecast for Tuesday and Friday.

Today, March 9, should be one of the nicer days with Environment Canada calling for sunny skies and a high of 7 Celsius.

That’s right on average for the high daily temperature in the Okanagan, which is 7 C, along with a low of -2 C.

Tonight should be clear with clouds rolling in before morning and a low of -5 C expected.

There’s a chance of flurries changing to showers on Tuesday morning, with up to two centimetres of snow forecast for Vernon and Kelowna.

It could be a windy day as well, with south wind at 30 km/h gusting to 50 in the afternoon and a high of 4 C in Vernon and Kelowna, 6 C in Penticton.

Penticton could see a 40 per cent chance of flurries in the morning, along with south winds at 30 km/h.

More clouds and a 40 per cent chance of showers is expected overnight, along with a low of 1 C.

Midweek should bring with it more precipitation, with showers and a high of 7 C predicted on Wednesday.

A sunny Thursday is expected to give way to periods of snow overnight, extending into Friday as a system approaches the Okanagan.

The high Thursday should reach 6 C, dropping to a high of only 1 C on Friday.

Vernon, Kelowna and Penticton should see sunny skies return for the weekend, but temperatures are going to be cooler than normal, with a high of 4 C on Saturday and a high of 6 C on Sunday.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
