3 South Okanagan communities awarded grants to lessen wildfire risk

Three South Okanagan jurisdictions are benefitting from the latest round of provincial funding to help local governments and First Nations prepare for the threat of wildfire.

The Penticton Indian Band received $150,000 to reduce buildup of flammable material such as wood debris, branches and undergrowth from high risk areas near homes and crucial infrastructure, according to a media release issued by province today, March 9.

“Fuel management supports us to protect the cultural and heritage value of our forests, as well as ensure they can contribute to a sustainable economy for many generations,” Penticton Indian Band Chief Chad Eneas said in the release.

The Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen received a $140,000 grant to update an official community plan to incorporate Firesmart principles to keep homes, neighbourhoods and communities safe. Some of the funding will also go to a FireSmart educator, for public outreach and education.

“Reducing wildfire risk and increasing our community’s resiliency to wildfire impacts are ongoing challenges. This funding will hope improve and expand our efforts to protect residents,” regional district Board Chair Karla Kozakevich said in the release.

The Town of Osoyoos also received $36,000 to assist with education and development considerations.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
