Person found dead following mobile home fire in West Kootenay

A body was found in a mobile home in the West Kootenay community of Burton following a fire on the weekend.

On Saturday, March 7 shortly after 9:30 p.m., Nakusp RCMP responded to a mobile home fire in the 5300 block of Highway 6 in Burton.

A report was made by an area resident who heard noises coming from the mobile home and discovered the blaze, however, they were unable to safely gain entry to the home, according to an RCMP release.

An individual was found deceased inside the home and the BC Coroners Service are now investigating, police say. Efforts are still underway to positively identify the deceased and notify their family.

"At this stage of the investigation criminality is not suspected in the blaze, nor the individual’s sudden death," Cpl. O’Donaghey said in the release.
