Get ready for more snow in the Okanagan

There’s at least one more blast of winter left for the Okanagan with a system expected to bring snow and cold tonight through tomorrow.

Some residents could have snow shovelling to do tomorrow as parts of the valley floor are expected to receive between five and 10 centimetres of snow on Friday, March 13, along with a temporary plunge in temperatures.

Still, the Okanagan forecast isn’t as bad as what residents in Southern Alberta could experience tomorrow into Saturday.

That region is bracing for a winter storm following a warning issued by Environment Canada that could see more than 15 cm of snow in Calgary and as much as 40 cm in other parts of the province over the next two days. Temperatures are expected to dip to -19 Celsius with windchills of -29 C and a risk of frostbite on Saturday in Calgary.

Environment Canada says to expect a mix of sun and cloud in the Okanagan today, March 12, accompanied by a 30 per cent chance of flurries or showers this afternoon with a high of 7 C.

Snow beginning Friday could see as much as five cm in Vernon and Kelowna with the wind becoming north at 30 km/h gusting to 50 in the morning. It’s going to feel pretty chilly overnight with a low of -1 C in Vernon and Kelowna along with a windchill to -8 C.

Penticton could see between five and 10 cm of snow Friday with north winds at 30 km/h gusting to 60 in the afternoon and a high of 1 C.

Cloudy, windy conditions are expected to persist through Saturday, with a high reaching only 0 C, before skies clear on Sunday.

Sunday’s high of 3 C is expected to be the start of a string of sunny days lasting through midweek, with temperatures climbing to 13 C by Wednesday.

Normal temperatures at this time of year in the Okanagan are highs of 8 C and lows of -2 C.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
