Warm temperatures could melt winter

VERNON – There could be massive melting early next week if predicted temperatures hold true.

Environment Canada is forecasting a high of 8 C next Monday along with a 30 per cent chance of showers. That would beat the hottest temperature on record for that day in over 100 years, with the current bar set at 7.8 C in 1945.

Temperatures are set to begin climbing this weekend, with highs of 5 C on Saturday and Sunday, accompanied by rain. With all that heat and precipitation, we may have to say goodbye to the snow. 

The leisure scene has been a bit quiet, but there are a few things to do in the area. The Magic of Vienna is a journey through the era of the Strauss family, Lehar, Schubert, and Beethoven, with Cvetozar Vutev on violin and narrator Rod Michell as guide. The magic takes place January 10 at 7:30 p.m. at the Salmon Arm Recreation Centre, 2550 Trans-Canada Hwy in Salmon Arm.

If the kids are seeming a bit restless and need something to do that holds their interest, the Okanagan Science Centre is open for business with fun, hands-on activities for kids. The event takes place each Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. The centre is located in Vernon at 2704 Hwy 6.

Watch athletes in action when the Vernon Vipers face-off against the Penticton Vees Friday night at Kal Tire Place. If that doesn't fit into your schedule, the Vipers will be back at it again Saturday night against the Coquitlam Express. Both games start at 7 p.m.
