As humans isolate, this B.C. grizzly emerges from a snowy hibernation

This week isn't all bad news bears.

Boo the grizzly bear at the Grizzly Bear Refuge in Golden's Kicking Horse Mountain Resort woke up to a snowy sight yesterday, March 19, and is re-joining the outside world while many humans are avoiding it because of COVID-19.

The video posted to Facebook shows the orphaned bear has he nuzzles out of his snowy den while many humans are going stir crazy in their own isolation.

The video was recorded by the refuge's manager Nicole Gagnon. In the clip, she says she has wanted to capture this annual moment for eight years.

Jenna Wheeler is a writer at heart. She has always been naturally curious about what matters to the people in her community. That’s why it was an obvious decision to study journalism at Durham College, where she enjoyed being an editor for the student newspaper, The Chronicle. She has since travelled across Canada, living in small towns in the Rockies, the Coast Mountains, and tried out the big city experience. She is passionate about sustainability, mental health, and the arts. When she’s not reporting, she’s likely holed up with a good book and her cat Ace.
