Early April Fool’s social media prank goes awry in Osoyoos

An online social media post intended as an April Fool’s joke went awry in Osoyoos when it sparked a police investigation.

RCMP spokesperson Sgt. Jason Bayda says police were alerted today, March 31, by concerned Osoyoos residents after a social media post made claims an individual would be canvassing door to door in Osoyoos to find households willing to take in seasonal workers.

Concerns about the claim in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has led to orders surrounding social and physical distancing, resulted in Osoyoos RCMP launching a criminal investigation into the matter.

Bayda said police have discussed their concerns with an individual they believe responsible for creating the online post and have urged that person to remove the post.

RCMP don't say if any charges will be laid.

Police are asking the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious or criminal activity to police as they continue to investigate the matter.
