COVID-19 related campfire ban issued for Central Okanagan

Campfires are now prohibited throughout the Central Okanagan and will remain so until further notice to support COVID-19 health efforts by reducing potential air pollution.

The ban follows last week’s decision from B.C. Environment and health officials to suspend open burning until at least April 15 in High Sensitivity Areas including the Central Okanagan.

In a press release from the Central Okanagan Regional District, the campfire ban is said to apply all local government fire jurisdictions in the Regional District of Central Okanagan including the City of West Kelowna, District of Lake Country, District of Peachland, Westbank First Nation and the Central Okanagan East and Central Okanagan West electoral areas. 

Campfires are not permitted at any time within the City of Kelowna.

Further, smoking is not allowed in any regional district or community parks, or municipal parks in Kelowna, West Kelowna and Lake Country. Smoking is also prohibited in children’s play areas, sports fields, undeveloped parks and wilderness trails in the District of Peachland.
