Social distancing required especially in emergency situations, says West Kelowna fire chief

Even in an emergency situation, physical distancing should be considered, West Kelowna Fire Rescue reminded residents following a weekend RV Fire.

Shortly after 3 p.m. Saturday, April 5, West Kelowna fire crews responded to a fire in an RV home on Ross Road. Crews from the Lakeview Heights Station quickly knocked the fire down. Other crews from Westbank, Rose Valley and Glenrosa stations stood by to provide assistance if required.

Fire chief Jason Brolund said in a press release nobody was home at the time and the unit, though not entirely destroyed, is now uninhabitable from the damage. Its residents will be staying with friends. 

Brolund also issued a reminder to members of the public to be mindful of physical distancing, even during emergency situations.

"It is critical that firefighters are given extra space to get their job done," Brolund said. "The public is respectfully asked to stay well away from emergency responders as they approach and work at fire scenes.

"This is for everyone’s safety and to ensure that firefighters stay healthy to continue to protect the community."

As for the cause of the fire, Brolund said it was accidental, possibly caused by an overheated electrical appliance.
