Penticton councillor files claim against former employer

PENTICTON – Penticton city councillor Judy Sentes launched a small claims court action against former employer Okanagan-Similkameen Neurological Society this week.

According to court documents filed Jan. 20, Sentes was employed as executive director with the society from August 1994 until her retirement on July 8, 2013.

Sentes claims in the filing she was to receive a payment upon her retirement to make up for low wages as executive director. She claims the written agreement describing the payment went missing, along with other records. In May 2013, the society's board approved a lump sum payment of $24,944.83, payable in January 2014 and a further $12,115.24 split into equal monthly payments of $198.53, she says. Sentes is seeking $24,944.83 in damages, plus interest and costs of legal action for a total of $25,120.83.

None of the claims have been proven in court. The neurological society has not yet filed a statement of defence. Calls and emails to Sentes and the society have not been returned.

Sentes serves as a Penticton director on the Regional District of Okanagan Similkameen board, in addition to being vice-chair of the Okanagan Similkameen Regional Hospital District.

Steve Arstad

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
