Penticton church victimized by online scam

Penticton RCMP are warning the public to be wary of internet scams after a local church fell victim to one recently.

RCMP are investigating after a Penticton church’s email account was hacked into and money transferred out.

The church became aware of the intrusion to their email account after receiving a message from their service provider notifying them of a recent password change.

It was later discovered their email address had been used to facilitate an online banking transfer.

Police spokesperson Const. James Grandy said in a release issued today, April 15, an investigation is currently ongoing.

Police are reminding the public to be vigilant while online.

Anyone who believes they may have been a victim of an online scam or fraud can report it to police or call the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
