Peachland council to consider application for copper, gold exploration next to old Brenda Mine site

District of Peachland council has a request from a mining company to look for copper, gold and molybdenum in hopes of opening a new mine next to the old Brenda Mine site.

District operations director Shawn Grundy recommends in a report to council that the application from Flow Metals Corporation for a new mine be opposed.

The company is proposing an exploration program consisting of 0.65 square kilometres of ground surveys, and 480 metres of trenching on their site located 3.5 km northwest of Peachland Lake, adjacent to the old Brenda Mine site.

Grundy notes in his report the District of Peachland has been reluctant in the past to support any further industry in Peachland’s watersheds until an updated and comprehensive watershed assessment is completed by industry.

If council does allow the work to proceed, the District is requesting a list of conditions including best practises for water protection, notification of work being done and an increase in stream buffers.

The work is anticipated to take place between now and March 31, 2021.

The company said in its Notice of Work to the province it has notified the West Bank First Nation of the project. 

Flow Metals describes its New Brenda property as a copper, gold and molybdenum prospect consisting of 15 claims west of the old Brenda mine open pit, 40 km west of Kelowna.

The former Brenda Mine was a copper and molybdenum producer, operating from 1970 to 1990.
