Bloody man resists arrest, allegedly assaults Vernon RCMP officer

A Vernon RCMP officer was allegedly assaulted Friday night after officers responded to reports of a suspect assaulting people in their vehicles on 32nd Street.

Police officers responded to a disturbance in the 4200 block of 32nd Street in Vernon April 24, at approximately 9 p.m., said Cpl Tania Finn, media relations officer with the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP, in a press release. The Vernon RCMP received multiple 9-1-1 calls from the public regarding a man who was assaulting people in their vehicles.

"Numerous police officers responded to the area and located the suspect covered in blood. As police attempted to take the suspect into custody, the suspect resisted arrest and allegedly assaulted a police officer. Multiple police officers were required to gain control of the suspect and two police officers were injured during the arrest," according to the news release.

The investigation is in its early stages as the RCMP is in the process of interviewing witnesses and victims, Finn said in the news release. 

"Potential witnesses and victims may have left the scene prior to police arrival. Specifically, investigators would like to speak with a younger Caucasian man who was driving a white Subaru-style car who may have been assaulted," according to the news release.

The suspect was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries and remains in police custody. The two police officers have minor injuries and were treated by medical staff, according to the press release.
