Final supermoon of the year on display this week

Fingers crossed for clear skies this week as it's the last chance to view a supermoon this year.

The last supermoon of 2020 will be visible tomorrow, May 6, when the moon will appear round and full throughout the night.

It’s the third and final supermoon of the year, and also the third closest, third biggest and third brightest, according to EarthSky.org.

The moon will be at its official full phase at 3:45 a.m. on May 7, if you want to stay up that late, or get up that early.

This supermoon is also known as the Full Milk Moon, the Full Flower Moon or the Full Corn Planting Moon.

Alas, weather conditions for viewing the supermoon don’t appear to be great tomorrow, May 6 in Kamloops and the Okanagan with Environment Canada predicting some cloud cover and maybe even a shower or two.

The good news is skies are expected to be clear on the evening of May 7, when the supermoon will still be lighting up the night sky.

If you're planning to get out the camera to get some shots of the supermoon, go here to find out how to make your night sky photography stand out.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
