UPDATE: Owner of dead horse found in Kelowna comes forward

The discovery of a horse that was fatally shot near Postill Lake Road near the Highlands Trail in Kelowna prompted a short-lived RCMP investigation.

“This animal was shod and appeared to be cared for prior to its death. We are attempting to determine if this is a case of illegal dumping of remains, or something of a more serious criminal nature,” Cpl. Cory Lepine of the RCMP Livestock Section said in a press release sent out today, May 5. “If this is an instance of someone attempting to euthanize an animal, this is not the way to do so, and the body cannot be left on the side of the road.”

Within hours, the RCMP said it was now in contact with the owner of the horse and wanted to take the opportunity to remind the public that it is unlawful to dump the remains of any livestock. Carcasses must be disposed of properly and according to legislation.

“Discarding something of this nature is potentially dangerous for several reasons,” Cpl Lepine said. “It can attract predators to an area where people, pets or other livestock frequent. It can also pollute nearby waterways or sensitive environments.”

The matter is still under investigation.
