Okanagan volunteers remove more than 8,300 lbs. of illegally dumped garbage from forest

The Okanagan Forest Task Force had their hands full removing illegally dumped waste this past weekend, and the numbers are staggering.

On Saturday, May 9, 8,311 pounds of garbage was removed from along Postill Lake Road, Kane Blake with the task force said in a press release. This was on top of the 29,100 pounds of metal removed the same day.

"Why people continue to think it's OK to dump their garbage in the bush is beyond me," Blake said.

Members of the community pulled together to help clean up trash, and a group of children collected over 50 lbs. of expended brass shell casings and shotgun shells.

"This wouldn't have been possible without the help from many amazing people and businesses who all pulled together to get this area clean yet again," he said. 

Local groups and businesses assisting in the effort include Okanagan Trail Blazers, GFL Environmental, K-Town Customs, ABC Recycling, Sunbelt Rentals and the regional district.

"This might be our biggest year yet with all the garbage along many back roads and we hope to team up with these groups again," he said.

The Okanagan Forest Task Force is looking at cleaning a new spot, and will be posting the location on its Facebook group.
