iN VIDEO: South Okanagan webinar has all you need to know about local snakes

It’s hiking season again, and for those getting out on local trails and hiking paths, it’s also the season to be snake aware.

A new ‘snake webinar’ series aims to tell you all you need to know about the region’s snakes and how to protect them and yourself should you encounter one on the trails this summer.

The series is being created by the Okanagan Similkameen Stewardship Society, a grass-roots, non-profit that promotes voluntary conservation, stewardship and enhancement of important habitats in the region.

The first part of the series has been posted to the society’s website with part two in the works.

For anyone interested in learning more about local snakes, the video is a must-see. It’s loaded with interesting facts and local statistics about snakes.

Part one is an introduction to snakes, describing their eating habits, how they reproduce, why some snakes are more vulnerable than others, and what you can do to help snakes on a day to day basis.

Part two will take the discussion further, with descriptions of the region’s various snakes, how to tell them apart and, probably most importantly, what to do if you see a rattlesnake in the wild.

Check out the first installment of this fascinating series in the video below.

Steve Arstad

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
