Impromptu ‘you honk, we drink and donate’ raises cash for Vernon SPCA

Armed with cardboard signs which read, "You honk, we drink and donate," a couple of Vernon residents managed to raise $200 for the B.C. SPCA in two hours while enjoying the sunshine and sipping some refreshing local beverages.

After a couple of days of rain and cloud, Vernon residents Carly Innes and Katie Webber, along with Lucy the puppy, took the opportunity during the sunshine yesterday afternoon, May 18, to raise some money, while social distancing from the driveway and patio.

"It was just a fun way to spend some time in the sunshine while giving back to a good cause," Carly Innes told iNFOnews.ca.

Each time a vehicle honked, they took a sip and threw a dollar into a donation jar. After just two hours the pair had raised $200 for the Vernon branch of the B.C. SPCA.

As well as having a sip when a vehicle honked as it drove past, Innes also responded to virtual honks after she posted about the fundraiser on the Facebook group Vernon & Area Community Forum.

Choosing a local bottle of fizz from the Baccata Ridge Winery in Enderby, as well as beverages from Vernon's BX Press Cidery, Innes didn't say how many drinks the pair got through but that it was "pretty relaxed" event and the drinks were all mixed with soda water.

Innes also thanks her neighbours for their patience as they were likely disturbed by all the honking over the two-hour fundraiser.
