High angle rescue from the bottom of Kelowna’s Canyon Falls

A man who fell 30 to 40 feet to the bottom of Canyon Falls in the Crawford Estates area yesterday evening was the focus of a high angle rescue.

At approximately 5:34 p.m. May 20 the Kelowna Fire Department Dispatch Center received a 911 call reporting the fall to the bottom of the canyon, which was later confirmed by the first arriving officer.

"It was determined that a high angle rescue was required to extract the patient," John Kelly, platoon captain for the Kelowna Fire Department, said in a press release.

"Two firefighters were able to get to the patient and provide an assessment. COSAR was also contacted and a helicopter was dispatched."

The patient was packaged and airlifted from the canyon and taken to a waiting ambulance. 

The fire department responded with 10 members, along with COSAR, RCMP and BCAS.
