Graduation walk planned for Central Okanagan students cancelled due to COVID-19 concerns

A grad walk that was set to be held next weekend for Central Okanagan high school students has been cancelled due to COVID-19 concerns.

Organizer Vangie Neyedli said she decided to cancel the event, which was going to be held May 30 at Ray Kandola Heritage Pier in Heritage Park in Peachland, because she wasn’t going to be able to maintain under the 50-person limit set out by the provincial health officer.

“It’s disappointing but understandable,” she said. 

Graduation ceremonies and proms have been cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic and there are restrictions on social gatherings larger than 50 people.

Neyedli originally organized the walk because her daughter, Shenelle Neyedli, a Grade 12 student at Mount Boucherie Secondary, wasn’t going to have a graduation ceremony due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Graduates had been encouraged to dress up and walk along the pier, while maintaining a safe distance apart.
