Vernon school buses won’t run when class resumes next week

Vernon students who do decide to return to school next week will be doing so under their own steam, as school buses will not be running.

Vernon school district will not be running school buses for students that do decide to return to class for the last three weeks of the school year.

School District 22 executive assistant Lynn Jameson said school bus drivers have been assigned to enhanced cleaning duties in preparation for the resumption of classes.

Due to a separate agreement, school buses will still be provided for Okanagan Indian Band members living on reserve, Jameson said.

Jameson said the school district did not yet know how many pupils planned to return to the classroom. The school district sent out a survey to parents and was currently compiling the results.

The Central Okanagan school district reported just under half of all students would return to school, according to a survey it sent to parents. It is not planing to run school buses.

Schools are scheduled to reopen June 1 with the last day of in-class learning June 23. Under provincial guidelines elementary school students will be returning two days a week and high school students one day a week.

Ben Bulmer

After a decade of globetrotting, U.K. native Ben Bulmer ended up settling in Canada in 2009. Calling Vancouver home he headed back to school and studied journalism at Langara College. From there he headed to Ottawa before winding up in a small anglophone village in Quebec, where he worked for three years at a feisty English language newspaper. Ben is always on the hunt for a good story, an interesting tale and to dig up what really matters to the community.
