Cougar sightings across the Okanagan this week; learn what to do if it’s you

There have been numerous cougar sightings throughout the Okanagan this week, prompting one local government to issue a warning.

Today, according to the District of Lake Country, an area resident was walking their dogs on the trail near Peter Greer when they saw the big cat, seemingly without incident. A similar report of a cougar in West Kelowna's Glenrosa neighbourhood was made yesterday.

It's a frightening prospect, but there are things that can be done to ensure safety, said WildSafe B.C.

Those are mainly making yourself big and threatening. If you're attacked by a cougar fight back, don't run away screaming or play dead.

If you notice that a cougar that is watching you, maintain eye contact with the cougar and speak to it in a loud firm voice. Reinforce the fact that you are a human and not an easy target. Back out of the area and seek assistance or shelter.

Call the Conservation Officer Service reporting line (1-877-952-7277) to report the incident.
