Penticton website outs nudists, claims “illegal activity”

PENTICTON – Penticton’s famous nude beach continues to make headlines, even in the dead of winter.

The beach began making regular headlines in June 2014 when a private landowner, who owns a strip of the beach along with the City of Penticton and the province fenced off a portion after claiming a nudist had scared off potential property purchaser.

The issue began heating up last July when formal complaints were lodged about nudists on the beach.

The conversation about keeping Three Mile Beach clothing optional moved online last August, and the latest salvo in the debate over whether nudists should be allowed at the beach surfaced recently over a collection of photos posted online showing who is using the beach.

The photos, taken from a vantage point on the property, show a collection of individuals on a footpath. The web page claims each individual had “walked around fences and past a minimum of five posted “No Trespassing” signs.

The site is the work of a coalition of concerned neighbours and families from Three Mile Road, according to information on the website.

Penticton RCMP Media Relations spokesperson Rick Dellebuur said he became aware of the website only yesterday, and had yet to see it.

Dellebuur said the RCMP forwarded charges to the Crown regarding the theft of a camera from the beach, near the end of last summer. He said several game cameras had been set up at various points at the beach through last summer.  The stolen camera now added a new dimension to the beach use issue.

“It was driven by nudity, now it’s theft,” he said.

He said the detachment was working with city officials to find a solution to the Three Mile Beach issue in time for this summer.

“We attended the beach all summer long, attempting to work with both sides to come up with a compromise, some way to co-exist,” Dellebuur said. “It’s one of those situations where it’s more a community matter than policing. We can’t always enforce. Issues like this need a compromise.”

The city will be hearing about the issue at Monday’s council meeting, as Cory Pinkowski, a resident of the Three Mile area, is slated to speak to council.

  1. Louise Burton, How long has 3 mile been a nudist beach? I thought I heard 40 years or so. If so, weren’t the people who purchased those properties made aware of it before purchase?

being nude in the sunshine is very liberating.More people should do it.So is swimming nude. We are born naked and we die naked. Our society is bombarded by boobs and sexual ads….yet no one seems to mind.Naked people of any age:no one as a perfect body like we see in ads. Nakedness bring better acceptance of our body.It is very healthy.

That should have been, “if you want to swim nude”.I like to be au natural, but I wouldn’t trespass on someone’s private property or steal their stuff to do it.

If you don’t want to swim nude, don’t break the law: go to a more isolated beach. Even though this beach was once considered isolated, it isn’t anymore. Population has increased and either get off your naked keister and lobby for a change in the code, or find a more isolated beach.Section 174, Canada Criminal Code:Everyone who, without lawful excuse, (a) is nude in a public place, or (b) is nude and exposed to public view while on private property…is guilty of an offence… (2) For the purpose of this section, a person is nude who is so clad as to offend against public decency or order.Notes:This offence is not aimed at conduct such as swimming nude at an isolated beach, even where the accused misjudges the loneliness of the beach. (Benolkin et al., 1977)

  10. And since God sent his prophet Isaah, I believe, out to into the world for 3 yrs Naked to speak his word. We know that being Naked is Not a sin to God. Thankfully there are many Christian Naturist and Christian Nudist Organizations, who remember the truth of the Word.

  11. People come into our small towns, ( the ones, we always called outsiders) because they fall in love with it, and buy here. Then try to change what is, and has always been, our way of life, in the Okanogan. It’s the people that make these towns, and nobody owns that lake. If you don’t like it , MOVE BACK OUT OF OUR TOWNS.

  12. Throw out the crooked, low life scum bag land owner out of Penticton, better jail him for illegal possession of PUBLIC BEACH. Seize his land and make it a public park. He need to be jailed for illegal photos, illegal installation of Camera. In Other word DESTROY HIS LIFE and made sure he end up in the street whiteout a penny.. a example need to be made out of him.

  13. Elisha Wall-McKay you are right…. When God created Adam and Eve, they were not created with clothing on their bodies. HOWEVER, when they disobeyed God they sinned.God, in His love, grace and mercy then clothed them with skins to cover their naked bodies.Because of Adam’s sin, all are under the curse of sin. God sent His son, Jesus to die and shed His blood to cover man’s sin…. John 3:16. Today is the day of salvation for all those who repent of their sin and accept all that Jesus did for them when He laid down His life – shed is blood for our sin.

Elisha, I hear you about body self-image, but it is quite easy to overcome. Just go to a nude beach and take your clothes off. After a few minutes of discomfort you will feel okay and get to love it. I have seen every type of body on a nude beach and it is obvious that people there do not pay much attentionand are quite okay with anyone. It just takes a little courage. Your support is appreciated.

  18. ..from the age of 12 we picked fruit, camped, played and grew in a healthy loving protected environment in Naramata andthis beach…never had any problems…never heard of any problems…until now…what? As our beautiful valley grows, people build their homes and have their own unique ideas of serenity and a life….the problem..well you are trying to fix something that’s not broken..fences? hidden cameras? I feel like some don’t want a compromise or to work issues through, just like the Berlin Wall…go away..so the many are fenced out so the few may rule..just a quick opinion…….lv this beach and all that is Naramata:):)………
